Summer Camps & After School

Summer Camps & After School

Published studies indicate that many children lose health improvements gained over the course of the school year during the summer months. Thanks to generous funding from the Walmart Foundation, The OrganWise Guys had the opportunity to work with NRPA and now the OWG programming is in over 1,000 summer camp/afterschool sites across the country. The result of that successful intervention is The OrganWise Guys Summer Camp/After-School Kit, specifically designed for these dynamic settings to be used as a year-round resource.

In addition, NRPA, in collaboration with Partnership for a Healthier American and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, launched a new campaign called Commit to Health to help kids grow up healthy with their community parks and recreation.

Is this an evidence-based program?

Yes! Thanks to generous funding from the Walmart Foundation and in partnership with National Recreation and Parks Association’s Commit to Health project, an independent evaluation was conducted and the results were presented at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics FNCE’s 2015 conference. This study shows child and adult healthy eating behaviors can be improved via summer camp programming. The impressive gains in nutrition knowledge and associated changes in healthy eating behaviors, and their potential to improve the health of children and their parents throughout our nation, give much support for expansion of similar out-of-school time efforts.

This out-of-school kit builds on the success of The OrganWise Guys Comprehensive School Program, which resulted in statistically significantly greater improvements in weight, blood pressure and waist circumference measures, as well as higher standardized test scores, of children in program schools as compared to children who were not.

These healthy and smart findings are published in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals – the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, the American Journal of Public Health and the Journal of Healthcare for the Poor and Underserved.

Are these materials linked to state standards?

Yes! Since this kit is designed for year round use (summertime and after school programming), it is important to know each item in the kit is also linked to grade-specific state standards and can be accessed here.

Are there implementation guides?

Yes! The curriculum comes with easy-to-use implementation guides to assist educators in program use. We have developed guides for use as part of a summer camp initiative as well as for use in year round afterschool programming. Click here to view all guides.

Are there evaluation tools?

Yes, various components of the kit have pre-test and post test tools available should your programming include evaluation. Speakers Kits have an evaluation component included on the CD-Rom that come with the kit. The Blue and Red Heart to Start Kits and the Gardening Kit also have specific evaluation tools, which are available here

Additionally, we have found that being able to evaluate educators works well too. Our educator post survey can be found here.

Are trainings available?

Yes! While this program is very streamlined and easy-to-implement, we recommend a short training to outline how this program can best work for each setting. We have free video trainings, which can be viewed and used at anytime (it is also a great overview for you to view while considering this program).

For larger projects (multiple sites), an in-person training by one of our program experts is often requested. To meet this need, we do offer a day rate of $2500 (which includes travel expenses in the U.S.). To decide which option is best for you, do not hesitate to call us at 800-786-1730.

Is this program cost-effective?

Yes! All components of the Summer Camp/After School are non-consumable and are designed for years of use. The only caveat to this are the 100 MyPlate Placemats, which are included in the kit. Many sites like to give a placemat to each participant at the end of the program to use as a tool at home to continue making healthy choices. These can be ordered each year should you choose to use this item as an incentive/give-away. These can be ordered in bulk and quantity discounts to apply. These also are available in Spanish as well.

Can the program be rolled out in stages and/or in conjunction with other initiatives?

Absolutely! Again, the program’s success is due in part to its flexibility to meet project/budgetary constraints/needs. We know all sites are unique! We have compiled what we believe is the most cost-effective program by combining a wide variety of interactive OrganWise Guys items. However, all items in the kit are also sold separately to fit into any budget parameters to get started and then can build on programming as budget allows.

As for including OrganWise components into other health programming already in place – again, a resounding YES! The more nutrition and healthy lifestyle education kids receive, the better. We work with a wide variety of partners and programs so if you are helping kids improve their lives WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU! One of the unique features of these materials (especially our OrganWise Gal/Guy pictured here) is that they can assist in bringing any nutrition and physical activity program to life!

Does this program have a parent component to reach families?

Yes! We understand the importance of helping busy parents incorporate healthy choices into not only their children’s lives, but theirs as well. To assist sites with this objective, we have equipped them with ready-to-go Foods of the Month monthly newsletters (English/Spanish) which are available on the Foods of the Month website. These can be printed out and sent home or, if technology allows, sites can post these on their website if they have one.

For sites interested in an adult wellness education (for parents/worksite/adolescents programming), click here for our Take Charge of Your Health Speaker’s Kit. This is a perfect complement to The OrganWise Guys programming happening in your center!

Are there any free materials?

Yes, to help bring even more OrganWise Guys messaging home, we have developed our free resources for parents (and kids of all ages) to access for a wide variety of FREE OrganWise Guys items for families to enjoy!

Do the materials come in Spanish?

Yes! Various components of this kit do come in Spanish. We also have a variety of additional OrganWise Guys items in Spanish, which can be viewed here.

Are grants available for this program?

Yes! A large percentage of The OrganWise Guys programs have been provided to sites thanks to the generous funding from private foundations (large and small), corporate sponsors and as part of the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) in qualifying locations.

Our large network of both funding and implementing partners (nationally and locally), has allowed us to be very successful in assisting eligible organizations to obtain funding for this program in thousands of school across the country. What educators are saying . . .

“It gave the children an opportunity to learn about healthy decision now that can affect their future when making healthy choices. As a youth advisor…I presented: how to read food labels to students, where they learned how to read the amount of servings in a food item, the children created collages of healthy foods, we discuss the food groups and the amount of servings they should have daily.”

“As a Registered Dietitian, I would love to travel to each site teaching children about healthy eating and exercise, but time is very limited. The OrganWise Guys allowed the summer food service site staff to provide nutrition education. Not only were children fed healthy meals, but they were also educated on the importance of healthy eating and why some foods were on their plates.”
